So, over the past few days I've had some ups and downs with the back problems. After PT on Tuesday I felt OK but later in the day starting to have a radiating pain on the side of my leg, the kind that sends lightening bolts of numbness down to the ankle. After a bit of icing and a bunch of Motrin, I felt better. On Wednesday morning I felt fine, and worked through my exercises. When I got to the one that involves putting a Dynaband around my ankles and side-stepping across the room, the pain came back very quickly. Eureka! The culprit has been discovered.
Last night I had a deep tissue massage with the Wonderful Judi (who has been my massage therapist for more than a decade now). She worked for an hour on my left IT band, which she said was stuck to the muscles by scar tissue. This was incredibly painful work, but today I am moving much more freely.
When I arrived at PT this morning, I relayed the massage treatment to my therapist, and she had me stop doing the side steps altogether. Since I was already using a yellow Dynaband (the easiest level), I am clearly not healed enough to be doing them. She has instead substituted a few others that are working much better. She also spent a good deal of time on my left IT band. The good news? The fact that pain is now isolating in an area outside of my back means that I am healing, and healing quickly.
Onward and upward.
